1. Train Objective

The Master program in Statistics prepares graduates for careers as applied statisticians in industry, government, consulting firms, and research organizations. Students pursuing the degree program in statistics may choose to emphasize either Applied Statistics or Economic Statistics.

After completing the program, students must meet the requirements specified below:

  Have the ability to understand and make inferences from various types of data in many different industries;

  Be able to choose appropriate statistical method to solve a given problem of data analysis, implement the analysis on a compute and communicate the results clearly and succinctly;

  Be able to draw meaningful insight from large pools of data, implement various methods for predicting outcomes based on quantitative information.

3. Academic Structure

The duration of the Master program is two years.

If the student is unable to finish the program in the due period, he/she needs to apply for an additional study period with scholarship or be transformed to the student at his own expenses.

4. Course Work

The Master program adopts a credit system. The student is required to complete 30 credits, including 28 course credits and 2 research credits. There are 4 types of courses: common compulsory, basic core compulsory, high-level core compulsory, elective courses. Among them, the common compulsory courses are “Introduction to China” and “Chinese Economy& Policy”. Students must take all basic core compulsory, high-level core compulsory courses, and the elective courses of at least 4 credits.

5. Examinations

In order to remain in the master program, students are required to pass (≥60 of 100) all exams of the basic core compulsory, high-level core compulsory, elective courses designed by the teachers in each semester. To continue in the master program, a student must pass the exams in at most two attempts for each and within 2 years of being admitted to the master program.

6. The Guidance Committee

Every student will have a thesis advisor as soon as he/she enters the master program. The thesis advisor takes the responsibility of guiding the student to find the research direction, and writing the dissertation. Advisors, committee members and teachers related to the master program should follow the principles below.

Advisors must know how to combine class teaching with social practice, and can trade off the relationship between systematic learning and special study.

The Guidance Committee will be formed when the student passes both prelims and selects a thesis advisor. Students are under the guidance of both the thesis advisor and committee. The committee member should have good research ability, and is a Ph.D./Associated Professor/Professor such that either: (a) has already had experience of teaching at least one course of more than 16 credits for international students in English, or (b) graduates from a from the university of an English-speaking country.

Teachers can teach students in accordance with their aptitude, and should emphasis on the development of the ability of self-study, expression, research collaboration and innovation.

7. Attendance at Colloquia and Scientific Research

The School has colloquia in every semester. Speakers are either members of the School or are statisticians or those conducting research in other disciplines related to statistics or economics. The School strongly recommends attendance by masters students. In addition, the advisors may apply for scientific foundations and do some researches.

8. Thesis

After completing all the credits required in the program, student will have around 6 months to work on the dissertation with the guidance from his/her supervisor. As the Master of Statistics emphasizes practical methods in statistics, focusing on real-world applications, the dissertation can be in the form of thematic studies, high-quality research reports or diagnostic reports using statistical data, and high-quality case analysis. The candidate, who has completed all the credits, independently completed their dissertations and passed the dissertation defense organized by Jiangxi University of Finance and Economics will be awarded the Master’s Degree after examination and approval by the academic degree evaluation committee.
