​On 2017/11/03 Friday afternoon, a report entitled “2016 Overseas Doctor’s Degree Thesis Opening Report” was held in the School  of Statistics, Jiangxi University of Finance and Economics. It was presented by a Pakistan PhD student, on account of his degree thesis opening report entitled “Empirical likelihood based inferences in classification and semiparametric regression”. Professor Luo Liangqing was the Chairman of the expert committee,the other two experts were associate professor Liu Xiaohui and doctor Ma Haiqiang.

The report lasted about one hour. During the report, Pro. Luo raised a question about the proposed classifiers that how to confirm whether they are better than the ones existing in the literature. To answer this question, the presenter with the help of his co-supervisor Dr. Liu said, “The proposed methods are based on empirical likelihood (EL) which is data-dependent, easy to use and has a close relationship with empirical depth, so they ultimately outperform among others”. Secondly, Dr. Liu proposed a correction on a statement mentioned about depth functions. Finally, Dr. Ma said, “Bayes methods have optimum performance, why they are not considered in lieu of EL-based methods?” He was replied that the Bayes methods are optimal though they need to estimate density function of the underlying distribution and they are computationally complex. The EL-based methods, on the other hand, are distribution-free and can easily be implemented. This is why they are preferred to others.

Moreover, various modifications were suggested by all the professors to improve the report which are intended to entertain by the student.At the end,the three experts expressed their more expectations,and they hoped that the Pakistan PhD student will succeed in the field of statistics and will contribute to Pakistan's economy.
