On behalf of our university, vice president Wang Xiaoping presented letters of appointment to President Peng, and warmly welcomed his coming. It is hoped that taking this opportunity, School of Statistics could become model of other schools with the Double Dean System, Institute of Statistics and Risk Management could gather talents of statistics internationally, and a high level researching team could be established, making School of Statistics in our university a national first-class one. Professor Luo Liangqing briefly introduced Professor Peng’s study and work experience, and his outstanding achievements in teaching and scientific research. Professor Wang Yejun, on behalf of our university, signed the agreement on bringing high-level talents.

Professor Peng said, he became a member of JXUFE after taking the appointment letter. With the support of JXEFU, he would try his best to help Institute of Statistics and Risk Management and School of Statistic be the national first-class highlands of researching and cultivating.

President Wangqiao met with Professor Peng before the appointment ceremony, thanking him for his joining us. President Wang fully affirmed Professor Peng’s achievements and his international influences, hoping that becoming the dean of Institute of Statistics and Risk Management and the dean of international affairs in School of Statistic, Professor Peng could lead the institutes to be the first class at home and to be known abroad. Besides, Professor Peng frankly discussed his further work plan with President Wang Qiao.

Previously, Professor Peng was invited to our university, lecturing on “Statistical inference for Lee-Carter Mortality Models” on December 21^st. During the lecture, Professor Peng provided detailed analysis of Lee-Carter Mortality models and expanding research on them. The models were published in 1992 in the top journal JASA, but there were seldom expanding research on them. Professor Peng referred to the shortcomings of the models from a perspective of statistics, and pointed out the great meaning of improving them. After the lecture, Vice President Wang Xiaoping talked with Professor Peng about internationalization of education, construction of first class subject, establishment of talent team and high level international institutes.

Also, Professor Liao Jinqiu, Secretary of the CPC Committee of JXUFE, met Professor Peng Liang during his visiting. They communicated about the way of Professor Peng’s joining the university, delivering the hope that Professor Peng could help accelerate the progress of constructing School of Statistics to be the first class inside the country.

Tall trees attract phoenix, blooming flowers attract butterflies. After being appointed, Professor Peng said, “From functional departments to leaders of the school, JXUFE has an excellent environment of talent team construction and education internationalization, which attract me willingly to be a member of JXUFE and a member of School  of Statistics.”
